By admin I meant to make sure you logged in as administrator.
- May 09, 2019 The Best External Hard Drives for Mac in 2020. Looking to add storage, or for a smart way to back up your Mac? Here's what you need to know, along with our top-rated Apple-friendly drives.
- Nov 14, 2019 There are two ways to access such external drives on your Mac – via Linux OS or FUSE system. The easiest would be installing Linux to a secondary drive or virtual machine. If you go with Linux installation, dual boot your Mac with Linux on another drive and use FAT32 as a transfer intermediary.
If you have another drive that has plenty of space on it, I would copy the files, as over filling a drive can kill it.
Storage is cheap these days, and if the drive is dying you can loose all the data on it, or have to spend $$$ to have it recovered. I would copy it if you can, then you can try reformatting.

I will not go past 70% of a drives capacity,( Ikeep mine ay 50% or less as it is easier on the drive and keeps it faster as it does not have to search as much) having had this happen to one of the drives in our household, which died but I was able fire it up one last time and move data to a new drive, was able salvage most of it, using a third party recovery application which was not cheap, or having a recovery service will be very expensive.
The drive may or may not be ok after reformatting, but it has been beaten, I don't know that I would trust it myself after.

You can try deleting things off of it,(video, photos, music, large files) but I would make a copy first, if you can to save your data.
